This is my open discussion post for people who put their widgets below the fold, inspired by a post on learnhow2earn.com. I came upon his site when I got bored of dropping the ‘normal’ way and decided to do it the “divablogger” way. I selected a popular category (Internet Marketing), closed my eyes, and just started right clicking randomly (opens the link in a new window/tab) til I counted ten.
Not everyone does it that way, though. And, since his site isn’t in the top 3 of his category, it is a good idea for him to put his widgets above the fold to get listed in Entrecard directories. Just so Entrecard members can find him faster.
Are you aware of Entrecard directories?
There are a lot of smart people who created bookmarking tools, link lists and what-not for promoting sites with widgets above the fold. See, placing it somewhere more accessible makes it convenient for people to drop their cards, and hence they will also advertise on your widget because you are a considerate person and you have the good heart to display their ads in a place that will get eyeballs.
Being in directories (which are strongly promoted by the creators) is like being a part of the daily life of entrecarders who use these directories and are too lazy to create their own. If that doesn’t seem like a good thing to you, I don’t know what is.
Joining the lists is simple. Simply put your widget above the fold then message the guy with the purple face (ahkong.net) or the vegetable persona (turnipofpower.com) and ask to be listed. These 2 have the most extensively used directories and you will benefit a lot just by being listed there.
As for the “use your head, people” phrase… I did use my head and something else. And, I put my widget above the fold because it’s the smart thing to do.

Pardon my ignorance on internet marketing techniques, but I just found the idea of telling someone “I won’t spam you” but letting someone else do it amusing.
See, I downloaded a mini ebook about blogging from a reputable (actually, more than just reputable… some people even call this blogger “A-list”) source and actually believed the “Give me your email address, and be assured that I won’t spam you” clause.
Ok, so I am gulliver. Moving on…
So first I come upon he splash page of how I will be liberated from my ignorance and finally be able to blog like a pro. By the end of the diatribe, I was actually kinda excited to view the promised e-book.
Then I was brought to a page where I am just a few steps away from the promised manna from heaven and then he said the magic words, “but first I need you to do something for me….”
Aha! I knew it, I said to myself, he’s gonna spam me! But no, the request was ‘please subscribe to the following resources’.
And because I was so lusting after the golden information buried within his ebook, subscribe I did… while mentally enabling all the spam filters in my mailbox.
After the subscriptions, the spam came, approximately 5 mails worth. A little over half an hour after that, the ebook arrived. Perhaps the delay was hoping that I’d read the mail that his soldiers of spam sent me during the time that I was waiting for the actual ebook. Again, I was very much tickled at the first lines of his mail:
“… because I value your time and mine, I will not make you wait any longer. Here is my ebook…”
The ebook’s content was actually good (the author being an A-list and all), and I enjoyed reading it; much more so than I enjoyed marking all the incoming spam on my mailbox. The only trouble I had was that, even if I’ve previously marked one mail address as spam, another one comes (with the same message) and manages to dodge my spam filter.
I considered sending a message to the blogger but later on considered that move as stupid. After all, he didn’t spam me, his affiliate dogs did.
As to who he is? Well, we’ve already established that I’m gulliver. And, now you can add the p*ssy and chicken sh*t phrases to that because I’m not telling. :D

How awesome is that? Now it’s even more inspiring for Filipinos to blog and market online!
The rejoicing, however, stops there. We just did our forex a while ago at the black market near our place and the dollar to peso rate is still 1$ to 40php.
I guess whatever I earn online should stay here until the dollar rates go up again. And no, I’m not being un-nationalistic here. The Philippine economy IS NOT getting stronger at all, but rather, it is the dollar (and the US economy) that is weakening.
Hope they make the best Presidential election decision for the sake of everyone who’s earning in dollars

I keep something like this beside me all the time. Just in case I find something nice to blog about. Ideas are like dreams that come and go. One may have felt so strongly about it while it’s there, but when the moment passes, the same emotions along with the details are gone.
Having said that, I also noted that some ideas are good only inside the head. Writing it on paper and reading it aloud seem to dull the essence somewhat. I wanted to be an uninhibited blogger, and I didn’t filter what I wrote on my list. But when actually posting them, something akin to a blogger’s conscience creeps in.
I envy the likes of slamblogger and Sam Freedom who can write about controversial issues and just let the bad feedback slide down their backs. Getting exposed to these people made me realize that blogging is also about developing a thick skin, and not letting the comments get to me.
Unfortunately, skills like handling-a-controversy-smoothly come with time. I was always sensitive as a non-blogger, and now that I’m in this world of thought-publishing, it might be a good idea to change a bit.
But for now, I’ll start with my list, and will try not to cross out too many things on it.

An interesting analogy:
The organ systems are the niches of businesses and weblogs.
The brain that dictates how the organs function represents the biggies in the internet, google and yahoo (and all others I don’t know of).
The heart is the search engine that pumps out the life blood of the whole worldwide web… searches!
For the blood to reach the organs, the heart must be strong. And the veins and arteries must be healthy… as in, search engine optimized!
Where do I belong in this anatomical map of the internet?
Evilwoobie.com could be an active stem cell somewhere in the hypothalamus, the gland in charge of delusions and lusty thoughts.
This blog could be a tiny neuron in the brain. That part in charge of bringing forth a person’s feminine side.
……
I could go on and on with this analogy, but I just managed to creep myself out. :-)
