Why People Love and Hate Memes

Written on February 12, 2008 – 4:54 pm | by Diva Blogger |

Memes (’meeems’) are link things that bloggers propagate to get their links on other blogs. Some are great, with twists and fun to do, but a lot are just meaningless lists that go on and on.

Why people do memes:

1. it’s good for their blogs
2. they like the person who sent them the meme
3. they have nothing else to post about
4. they just love ‘em. period.

I think people hate memes because of the obligation that goes with it. I could link someone voluntarily or if she asked, but I guess to some of us, meme-ing is much more fun!

The memes that force a person to link to people she barely knows could leave a bitter taste, if not for the thought that his/her link will also propagate because of the same ‘forcing’ that the meme does to people.

I have rejected memes before because i didn’t want to link to people whose links are mandatory in the memes. In these cases, I message the person who sent me the meme and implored to be exempted… with the promise to put her link on my sidebar. On all my blogs, if she wished.

Love ‘em or hate ‘em, they could be good for you.

I’m picky about which memes I do. Just as I try to be a bit choosier about the quizes too. Both can get out of hand. I don’t do memes which are only for links (unless they come from a really good blogging friend). I like to do those which are interesting or unique. Same for quizes, I do those which end up giving an interesting answer.

I’m picky too, but it’s so hard to say no to friends
